“…A traditional airblast sprayer axial fan (90 cm diameter) can produce air volumes up to 47 m 3 /sec, compared to the Croplands SARDI fans (38 cm diameter) on the Quantum Mist TM sprayer which can produce 3.35 m 3 /sec each when operated at 2000 rpm (Furness 2005). Higher air outputs are more suited for larger canopies and can create more drift in smaller canopies (Pergher and Gubiani 1995, Grella et al 2017, Sinha et al 2019. Drift on the ground may be additionally attributed to the differences in foliage density over the vertical height of the vine.…”

“…Solid set canopy delivery systems are a network of tubes that cover an entire field and apply pesticides through nozzles positioned in the plant canopy. In testing, these systems have had equivalent control of insect pests and similar deposition on plant tissues to standard air blast sprayers, with less drift 41 . Although solid set canopy delivery systems are still in the research phase, they may become more robust and reliable as an alternative for ground spray equipment, and could make applying pesticides without humans in the field and during short periods of ideal conditions possible.…”

“…One of the variants of a fixed spray delivery system, a solid set canopy delivery system (SSCDS), has shown potential to be an alternative to conventional air-assisted sprayers [9][10][11][12]. Typically, an SSCDS is a hydraulic pressure-operated spray delivery system consisting of a network of spray lines and micro-emitters installed within the canopy to achieve effective spray performance while reducing pesticide drift through targeted spraying [10,11,[13][14][15][16]].…”

An applicator system, with a spray tank, a gasoline pump, and an air-compressor, was used to feed the spray lines with spray liquid and compressed air during different SSCDS operational stages [9,12]. Such systems have been evaluated in the past for spray application in apples, wine grapes, and other tree-fruit canopies [10][11][12]16,17].…”
