Dreidimensionale Dicken- und Volumenbestimmung des Kniegelenkknorpels mit der MRT: Reproduzierbarkeit am Probanden

Abstract: The results show that the presented method for determining the quantitative distribution of articular cartilage yields a high degree of precision. It offers new possibilities in screening risk groups, monitoring the course of degenerative joint disease and the investigation of functional adaptation of the cartilage to mechanical loading.

“…The presented absolute values for the total knee cartilage volume are approximately 12% greater as compared to seven subjects analysed by Westhoff et al 20 and eight subjects reported by Eckstein et al 39 . The mean ages and ranges of both of their samples were larger than for the present group of subjects.…”

“…In our study only MRI sequences were used that had been used in previous similar studies. Previous studies, in which preselected cases were examined or results of in vitro tests were reported, came to discrepant findings regarding the reliability of the MRI-cartilage-diagnostic [6,11,12,19,21,22,25,27]. Our own experiences through daily routine also showed discrepancies between magnetic resonance tomographic and arthroscopic results concerning the quantification and, most of all, the graduation of cartilage lesions.…”
