Dreams and Epilepsy

Abstract: The relationship between dreams and epilepsy is illustrated by two patients whose awake epileptic seizures and recurrent dreams during night sleep had similar content. In both of our cases the EEG showed right anterior temporal spike discharge, suggesting a role for the temporal lobe in the association between dreams and seizures.

“…The picture is most often one of complex partial seizures with a temporal-lobe focus; some, but not all, studies find a right lateral bias. The nightmares may have content similar to daytime ictal visual hallucinations, or include elements of the daytime seizure aura, phosphenes, and other sensory phenomena (Reami et al, 1991;Solms, 1997). Sometimes a nightmare may lead into a generalized nocturnal seizure.…”

“…For instance, viewing facial expressions triggers expressions on one's own face (as measured by electromyography), even in the absence of conscious recognition of the stimulus [135,136]. Moreover, fMRI studies indicate that similar networks of motor and emotional brain areas are activated by the perception of emotional expressions and the overt imitation of similar emotions [126,128,137]. Lesion studies indicate that right frontoparietal cortex is necessary for the correct recognition of emotions from prosody [25,138].…”
