Dream of the Rood, The

Abstract: The Old English Dream of the Rood is a 156‐line alliterative poem that appears in the Vercelli Book of Old English poetry and prose. The poem chronicles “the best of dreams,” a vision of a speaking cross that tells the story of the Crucifixion. The Cross ends by exhorting his listener to change his life, bringing the good news of salvation to other men.
