Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is commonly understood in Malaysia as providing care and education for young children from the age of newborn until about six years old, before they enter formal elementary education. Various curriculum and teaching approaches were developed to enhance children's learning experiences based on their needs, age, and ability to support all three main developmental aspects: cognitive (language development and problem-solving skills), physical (development of gross and fine motor skills), and social-emotional (interaction with others). This paper will provide an overview of Malaysia's ECCE from its early implementation until today based on literature review of related research conducted in Malaysia. The definition of ECCE in Malaysia, its history and development, ECCE providers and type of institutions, current ECCE curriculum, and ECCE related acts in Malaysia are presented. In addition, the challenges faced, its consequences, and future course of ECCE in Malaysia are also discussed. It is envisaged that this article would be a platform for the relevant stakeholders worldwide to gain an insight on the Malaysian ECCE, serve as a benchmark and act as a reference for their respective ECCE settings.

Sound oral language skills (OLS) are the foundation for academic success, and building language skills through fun learning experiences is essential to children’s language development. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of improving the OLS of 5-year-old children in the classroom through drawing activities. Using a case study design under qualitative methods, 4 children were selected as the study participants through purposive sampling for a 3-week drawing activity intervention, specifically from 1 September to 21 September 2023. This study was conducted in a kindergarten affiliated with a university in eastern China, and data were collected through observations, interviews, and teachers’ reflective journals. Observations focused on vocabulary richness and sentence coherence. The results of the study indicated that the drawing activity intervention provided children with rich opportunities to develop their OLS compared to traditional classroom activities. Children’s active participation in classroom interactions through drawing activities enhanced their vocabulary richness and sentence coherence. This study highlights the potential of drawing activities in children’s oral language development and provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers. Thus, it is recommended that educators introduce targeted language development scaffolding strategies in drawing activities, as well as increased collaboration with parents so as to enhance language learning in these activities.

While the benefits of curated environments and provocations in emergent curriculum for young learners have been documented, less is known about the effects of emergent curriculum for adult learners and instructors in a studio art context. This work investigates what happens when art education foregrounds and follows students’ interests and questions, using arts-based tools, processes, and approaches to explore the creation and interpretation of 2D artwork. The author reexamines rituals in studio teaching practices and engages narrative inquiry to reflect on the effects emergent curriculum and contract grading have on both students and the instructor. The curated environments of the classroom, campus art museum, city streets, and students’ homes influenced questions, materials, research, conversations, and artistic possibilities while blurring studio traditions. The resulting emergent curriculum forged new connections among the students, the instructor, and their community while shifting learning toward dispersed, collective power rather than concentrated, individual power.
