Drastic improvement in the S-band relativistic magnetron operation

Abstract: The superior operation of a S-band relativistic magnetron powered by a Linear Induction Accelerator with ≤400 kV, ≤4 kA, and ∼150 ns output pulses was revealed when the magnetron was coupled with a resonance load and a part of the generated microwave power stored in the resonator was reflected back to the magnetron. It is shown that, under optimal conditions, the efficiency of the magnetron operation increases by ∼40% and the generated microwave power reaches the power of the electron beam.

“…Recent investigations 9,10 show that the efficiency of the relativistic S-band magnetron can be significantly (up to 40%) increased when part of the radiated electromagnetic power is reflected into the magnetron cavity. This effect, to our knowledge, has not yet been discussed.…”

“…It had been shown 4-8 that ILMs and SILMs are able to fix the operating frequency and phase, and essentially decrease the noise of the radiation. 9,10 show that the efficiency of the relativistic S-band magnetron can be significantly (up to 40%) increased when part of the radiated electromagnetic power is reflected into the magnetron cavity. This effect, to our knowledge, has not yet been discussed.…”

“…The LBO waveguide taper modification therefore constituted an extremely high-Q configuration relative to the standard load despite good coupling to the microwave extraction assembly. Modification of the oscillator loaded quality factor Q L and load characteristics has a significant impact on the operation of magnetrons [6,7,49,51,66,114,115]. The consequences of this fact for LBO operation include artificially higher powers, less informative pulse energies and efficiencies, longer pulselengths, differences in operating frequencies, and possible changes in current due to the modified RF voltage amplitudes across the cavities [116].…”

“…[11][12][13] Earlier research [14][15][16] of high-impedance (!50 X) RMs with radial microwave power output showed its high microwave power efficiency ($60%). Recently, [17][18][19][20][21] we demonstrated the increase in the microwave pulse duration up to $150 ns with the same high efficiency. However, for long (!100 ns) microwave pulses, RMs have some specific features not typical to conventional magnetrons.…”
