Drastic changes in the amphipod fauna (Crustacea) of Dutch inland waters during the last 25 years

Abstract: After the introduction of Gammarus tigrinus in The Netherlands some 25 years ago and of other recently invading amphipods (Crangonyx pseudogracilis and Corophium curvispinum) the native species decreased, the invaders increased. The success of these invaders and its impact on the local amphipod fauna is discussed. Electrophoretic tests give evidence that a second invasion of Gammarus tigrinus, this time from Germany, is taking place. Some predictions about future developments are made.

“…These factors may operate at a variety of scales, from local patches (e.g. MacNeil et al 1999), to within and between catchments (this study ;Holland 1976;Cao et al 1996;Dick 1996) and to large geographical scales over the range of Gammarus and Crangonyx species in Europe and North America (see Barton and Hynes 1976;Pinkster et al 1992;J. “…The generally mutually exclusive distribution of C. pseudogracilis relative to Gammarus spp. has been often noted at large geographical scales in Europe and North America (Barton and Hynes 1976;Pinkster et al 1992; J. Holsinger personal communication) and between and within catchments (e.g. Holland 1976;Cao et al 1996;Dick 1996).…”

“…In the lakes of the IJsselmeer area they join earlier invaders like the Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha (present in the area since 1936; Van Benthem Jutting 1954) and the amphipod Gammarus tigrinus which species was probably introduced to Lake IJsselmeer deliberately in 1960; Pinkster et al 1992) that were generally abundant, but recently show signs of decline (Noordhuis et al 2009;Noordhuis 2009). Both Chelicorophium curvispinum and Dikerogammarus villosus may have been affecting Dreissena polymorpha densities, and D. villosus was shown to predate a host of other species (Bij de Vaate 1994;Dick and Platvoet 2000;Platvoet et al 2009b; Van der Velde et al 2000).…”
