Dramatic effects of chlorine addition on expanding synthesis conditions for fluorine-free metal–organic decomposition YBa2Cu3Oy films

Abstract: The synthesis conditions of fluorine-free metal–organic decomposition (FF-MOD)-processed YBa2Cu3O y (YBCO) films on buffered metallic substrates have been systematically investigated. Chlorine addition to the starting solution was found to be quite effective for expanding the synthesis conditions of highly c-axis-oriented YBCO films. YBCO films showing a high critical current, ∼100 A/cm (77 K, ∼0 T), were successfully obtained by sintering at 740 °C, which is ∼50 °C lowe… Show more

“…For further improvement, we moved on to the replacement of the reactively sputterdeposited NbN thin film by Y123 deposited by the metal-organic deposition (MOD) method [25][26][27]. Because metal-organic precursors dissolved in a carrier fluid such as propionic acid can easily go into the trench, this is advantageous in comparison with sputter deposition with a limited throwing power.…”

“…Y123 thin films sometimes grow in mixed orientations of the c-axis and aaxis [25,27]. Even if c-axis-oriented Y123 is successfully grown on buffered Si substrate [26], the c-axis of the Y123 thin film grown on the bottom of the trench and the c-axis of the Y123 thin film grown on the trench wall cannot be in parallel with the same magnetic flux simultaneously. Therefore, there remains many challenges in material science and engineering to attain depositions of high-quality Y123 thin films with a sufficient magnetic flux density dependence of j c in the trench.…”

“…It is known that superconducting phase stability is increased when replacing oxygen with chlorine [12]. Recently, Takanori Motoki et al reported [13][14][15] the preparation of halogen (Cl, Br) added YBCO thin films on single crystal SrTiO 3 by the fluorine-free MOD method led to the internal epitaxial growth of small nanocrystals Ba 2 Cu 3 O 4 Cl 2 , which effectively promoted the biaxial orientation of YBCO crystals. Further studies showed that halogen-added YBCO films not only improved the flux-pinning performance of the films, but also expanded the synthesis conditions.…”

“…In order to suppress BaCeO 3 formation, several approaches have been proposed. For instance, Motoki et al found that addition of chlorine in the precursor enables formation of YBCO under low sintering temperature so that undesirable reactions are minimized . From the perspective of reaction kinetics, the influences of sintering time on YBCO conversion were also studied .…”
