Drainage Alone or Combined with Anti-tumor Therapy for Treatment of Obstructive Jaundice Caused by Recurrence and Metastasis after Primary Tumor Resection

Abstract: Aim: To compare drainage alone or combined with anti-tumor therapy for treatment of obstructive jaundice caused by recurrence and metastasis after primary tumor resection. Materials and Methods: We collect 42 patients with obstructive jaundice caused by recurrence and metastasis after tumor resection from January 2008 -August 2012, for which percutaneous transhepatic catheter drainage (pTCD)/ percutaneous transhepatic biliary stenting (pTBS) were performed. In 25 patients drainage was combined with anti-tumor … Show more

“…Due to the many lymph nodes around the hepatic hilum, a metastatic tumor can easily cause hilar lymph node enlargement, which could compress the bile duct and cause obstructive jaundice [7]. Liver metastasis and remnant liver recurrence after resection around the hepatic hilar bile duct can also invade or compress the hilar bile duct and cause obstructive jaundice.…”

“…Most of these patients lost the chance of a second operation when recurrence of the primary tumor was transferred to the liver and the lymph nodes around the hilum or the bile duct [7]. Patients with biliary obstruction who had a history of primary tumor resection have limited life expectancy because of the limited stent patency and tumor progression.…”
