Draft Genome Sequences of Xanthomonas sacchari and Two Banana-Associated Xanthomonads Reveal Insights into the Xanthomonas Group 1 Clade

Abstract: We present draft genome sequences for three strains of Xanthomonas species, each of which was associated with banana plants (Musa species) but is not closely related to the previously sequenced banana-pathogen Xanthomonas campestris pathovar musacearum. Strain NCPPB4393 had been deposited as Xanthomonas campestris pathovar musacearum but in fact falls within the species Xanthomonas sacchari. Strain NCPPB1132 is more distantly related to Xanthomonas sacchari whilst strain NCPPB 1131 grouped in a distinct specie… Show more

“…This gene has previously been used to infer phylogenetic relationships within xanthomonads [10]. As expected, the best nucleotide matches of DAR61454 atpD were from other X. translucens strains with pathovar specifications of either translucens or graminis .…”

“…isolated in Rwanda have reduced T3E repertoires (5,17,59). Xanthomonas sacchari and strains of X. arboricola and Xanthomonas cannabis do not present known T3Es (67,70,126). Interestingly, in several Xanthomonas species, a correlation was observed between pathovars and the composition of T3E repertoires (57)(58)(59), further suggesting that T3E repertoires play a major role in determining the host specificity of strains.…”
