Lager brewing first occurred in Bavaria in the 15th century, associated with restrictions of brewing to colder months. The lager yeast, Saccharomyces pastorianus, is cold tolerant. It is a hybrid between Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces eubayanus, and has been found only in industrial settings. Natural isolates of S. eubayanus were first discovered in Patagonia 11 years ago. They have since been isolated from China, Tibet, New Zealand, and North America, but not from Europe. Here, we describe the first European strains UCD646 and UCD650, isolated from a wooded area on a university campus in Dublin, Ireland. We generated complete chromosome level assemblies of both genomes using long- and short-read sequencing. The UCD isolates belong to the Holarctic clade. Genome analysis shows that isolates similar to the Irish strains contributed to the S. eubayanus component of S. pastorianus, but isolates from Tibet made a larger contribution.

Forest pathogens are a major cause of forest disturbances and they have a significant economic impact on commercial forestry. Genomics is an important technology now available for studies concerning tree health, enabling researchers to better understand pathosystems and potentially to prevent future epidemics from occurring. Comparative genomics at the species level makes possible the identification of unique genomic regions and/or genes that influence the development of pathogens and their ability to cause disease.In addition, population genomics can reveal processes involved in the evolution of pathogens potentially showing how selection and/or environmental adaptation could have driven their emergence. Using these tools, important mechanisms involved in the evolution of pathogens and their hosts can be determined. Practical applications of such knowledge include the formulation of strategies for pathogen detection and surveillance, as well as breeding diseaseresistant trees. These new and evolving technologies are set to ensure the long-term sustainability of plantation forestry in the Southern Hemisphere.

Abstract: Taphrina betulina is the ascomycete yeast that causes the formation of witches’ brooms in birch trees. Here, we report the first draft genome sequence of T. betulina, from strain UCD315, isolated from soil in Ireland. The genome is haploid and 12.5 Mb long.
