DRACULA2, a dynamic nucleoporin with a role in the regulation of the shade avoidance syndrome in Arabidopsis

Abstract: When plants grow in close proximity basic resources such as light can become limiting. Under such conditions plants respond to anticipate and/or adapt to the light shortage, a process known as the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS). Following genetic screening using a shade-responsive luciferase reporter line (PHYB:LUC), we identified DRACULA2 (DRA2), which encodes an Arabidopsis homolog of mammalian nucleoporin 98, a component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). DRA2, together with other nucleoporins, participates… Show more

“…Two light intensity/shade responsive genes were detected to be up-regulated under SHADE in the northern population – DRACULA2 (DRA2) involved in hypocotyl elongation and control of shade induced gene expression (Gallemi et al , 2016) and PHYTOCHROME RAPIDLY REGULATED 2 ( PAR2 ) that encodes a protein which is up-regulated under shade and acts as negative regulator of shade avoidance response (Roig-Villanova et al , 2006). One light-regulated gene was detected to be up-regulated in the southern population - TEOSINTE BRANCHED 1, CYCLOIDEA AND PCF TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR 2 ( TCP2 ); TCP2 is a positive regulator of photomorphogenesis and is involved in response to blue light (He et al , 2016).…”

“…Nups that were reported in the past for one phenotype or pathway are often later associated with another pathway, either related or unrelated, as is the case for Nup88 and Nup98 in Genenncher et al (2016) and Gallemí et al (2016), respectively. Nup88-also called MOS7-was known as a contributor to the autoimmunity of the suppressor of npr1-1, constitutive1 mutant (Cheng et al, 2009).…”

“…Nup98a is also known as DRACULA2, based on a mutant screen for genes involved in shade avoidance syndrome (SAS). In nup98a mutant alleles, the SAS response is diminished (Gallemí et al, 2016). In addition to nup98a, several mutant alleles of NUP160 and NUP96 (scaffold Nups) as well as NUP58, NUP54, and NUP62 (like Nup98a, predicted to be peripheral Nups) were also tested.…”

“…Nup98 is a mobile and peripheral FG (for Phe-Gly domain) nucleoporin and spans from the nucleus to cytoplasmic of the central channel of the NPC [4,5]. Arabidopsis thaliana Nup98a (also known as DRA2) is also found in different subcellular locations [6]. Nup98 is involved in regulation of cargo export and import, gene expression, transcriptional memory, and multiple developmental processes in animals and yeast [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”
