In recent years, paraffinic fuels have attracted attention because of their potential for reducing diesel exhaust emissions, mainly smoke or particulate matter emissions. One of the paraffinic fuels, a Fischer-Tropsch diesel fuel, was selected to demonstrate the lower exhaust emissions while improving fuel economy in this study. To examine the detailed effects of fuel specifications on diesel combustion and emissions, preliminarily tests for three Fischer-Tropsch fuels and a baseline diesel fuel were carried out with three diesel engines having different engine displacements. In addition, differences in combustion phenomena between Fischer-Tropsch fuels and the baseline diesel fuel were observed by means of a singlecylinder engine with optical access. From these findings, one of the tested engines was modified to improve both exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, simultaneously, dedicated to the use of neat Fischer-Tropsch fuels. The conversion efficiency of an oxides of nitrogen reduction catalyst has also been improved. The desirable properties of Fischer-Tropsch fuels for diesel combustion, namely high cetane number and absence of poly-aromatic hydrocarbon contents, have been fully utilized to enhance the conventional diesel combustion limits to show the possibility to achieve very low exhaust emissions with substantial improvement in fuel economy. The results of this study indicate not only the superior emission characteristics of the Fischer-Tropsch fuels, but also evidence that higher exhaust gas recirculation and lower excess air ratios will be a key concept of both engine and aftertreatment optimization for further fuel consumption improvement.

This article chose the new type alcohol-based fuel as the engine fuel, realized lean burn in a CA4GA5 engine, and got the lean burn limit to 20.6. Taking the gasoline as equivalent fuel, and according to 10%, 20%, and 30% volume proportion of alcohol-based fuel, three new types of alcohol-based gasoline synthetic fuel, M10, M20, and M30, were formed. A comparative study of the original engine emissions used new types of alcohol-based gasoline synthetic fuels with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and different blending ratios based on M0 at different stoichiometric air-to-fuel ratios was carried out. This article studied the influence of air-to-fuel ratio on cycle emissions under the lean burn condition and analyzed the characteristics of the new European driving cycle. Experimental results show that compared with the working condition of pure gasoline engine, the emissions of total hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide gradually reduce with the increase of alcohol-based fuel blending proportion, while the NO x content presents the rising trend.

Continuously tightening pollutant and noise emission regulations have been the key motivation for engine -and engine related technology-research, development and optimization. Such trend gave rise to the gradual introduction of after-treatment systems to reduce pollutant emissions in automotive applications. However, in the last two decades the level of restrictions have made the use of after-treatment systems intensive and mandatory, evolving from small individual devices to very complex systems often including more than one device.Even though the main purpose of after-treatment systems is pollutant emissions abatement, they also exert a strong influence on wave dynamics, back-pressure and acoustic behaviour of the exhaust line, therefore changing the flow, acoustic and pressure characteristics of the exhaust flow. This in turn redefines the boundary conditions for the main silencing device (muffler) placed downstream. A better understanding of the sound attenuation and pressure drop due to the presence of after-treatment systems could have beneficial impacts, allowing the optimized design of the devices and the complete exhaust lines, especially the muffler. It was considered that a promising approach to reach a better understanding on the matter would be to account for the influence that usual components and characteristics of after-treatment systems have on their actual behaviour.Experimental and modelling approaches were used to study and characterize the acoustic and fluid-dynamic behavior of a diverse set of state-of-the-art after-treatment systems and devices, covering a wide range of elements and characteristics representative of after-treatment applications of commercial use. Transmission loss and pressure drop were selected as the key parameters to account for the sound attenuation and back-pressure generated by each device. Well established measurement facilities and procedures were used for the experimental characterization.
