Downstream effects of hydropower production on aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages in two rivers in Costa Rica

Abstract: Despite the fact that little is known about the consequences of hydropower production in tropical areas, many large dams (>15m high) are currently under construction or consideration in the tropics. We researched the effects of large hydroelectric dams on aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages in two Costa Rican rivers. We measured physicochemical characteristics and sampled aquatic macroinvertebrates from March 2003 to March 2004 in two dammed rivers, Peñas Blancas and San Lorenzo, as well as in the undammed C… Show more

“…La construcción de represas para la producción hidroeléctrica es una actividad que continúa en aumento en América Latina (Ramírez, Pringle & Wantzen, 2008). Los impactos en los ecosistemas lóticos y en los ensamblajes de macroinvertebrados son diversos y algunas veces no tan fuertes como se esperaría (Chaves-Ulloa, Umaña-Villalobos & Springer, 2014). Otra actividad con importantes impactos sobre los ecosistemas acuáticos es la agricultura.…”

“…), and the impact of dams on river benthic invertebrate communities (Statzner et al . ; Chaves‐Ulloa, Umana‐Villalobos & Springer ). Many environmental monitoring programmes require the collection and killing of organisms due to the difficulty of identifying specimens in the field (Reynoldson & Metcalfe‐Smith ; Hawkins et al .…”

“…However, a mere reduction in flow velocity may eventually lead to either an increase or decrease in macroinvertebrate abundance (Dewson et al, 2007). This changes in hydrology and water quality causes differences in aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages between upstream and downstream of dams or weirs (Chaves-Ulloa et al, 2014;Gezie et al, 2023). This is why the differences in macroinvertebrate assemblages have the potential to indicate free-flowing and impounded stream conditions (Linares et al, 2019), and their diversity can also mimic human impacts in river ecosystems (Gezie et al, 2023).…”
