Using the data collected as part of a Quality of Life (QoL) survey in the Brisbane-South East Queensland region (SEQ) of Australia, this paper examines differences in satisfaction levels between downshifters and non-downshifters, and identifies socio-economic predictors of the downshifting phenomenon. Almost 30% of survey respondents are classified as downshifters. Multivariate Analysis of Covariance reveals significant differences between downshifters and non-downshifters in a number of life-satisfaction domains, although the degree to which they were satisfied with their life before downshifting is unknown. Analysis of Covariance shows that downshifters reported a significantly lower level of satisfaction than non-downshifters, especially with respect to satisfaction with the amount of money available to them, independence or freedom, and employment. Multivariate logistic regression analysis reveals that post-secondary education and employment were positively associated with downshifting, while age was significantly associated with downshifting. It is argued that if downshifting is associated with lower levels of satisfaction, intervention may be required to initiate programs to engage downshifters more fully in the workforce by facilitating more flexible work arrangements and an improved working environment.

What does leisure mean to people? Has the essence of leisure been changed? The individuals may feel controlled by a system that values material possessions more than emotional and spiritual wealth. In the present context, it seems that people respond to the pressures of being productive and of consumption by measuring what they are and how much they have rather than analyzing the quality of who they are and what they have. These extrinsic motivators tend to govern people's lives and behaviours influencing how they relate to others. These motivators have also impacted the spiritual and emotional elements of quality of life. Leisure is no longer a disposition of the mind, spontaneous and genuine; it has become a disposition of the society. Thus, the historical sense of freedom in leisure has been lost to consumerism. This paper analyzes the elements that have transformed leisure behaviour and explores alternatives to help regain the philosophical essence of leisure.Résumé. La signification du loisir a t'elle changé? Est-ce que les individus se sentent plus en contrôle par un système qui valorise l'acquisition de possessions, plutôt que les aspects émotionnels et spirituels? Dans ce contexte actuel, il semble que les gens réagis-sent à la pression d'être productif par une hyperconsommation. Ces motivations extrinsèques tendent à régir la vie des gens et influence les rapports sociaux. Il semble que ces motivations influencent aussi la qualité de vie. Les loisirs modernes n'ont donc plus de tendances spirituelles, spontanées et authentiques, elles sont maintenant déterminées par des aspects plutôt socio-économiques. Ainsi, le sens historique de la liberté dans les loisirs a été perdu au consumérisme. Cet article analyse les éléments qui ont transformé les comportements de loisirs et explore des alternatives pour aider à retrouver l'essence philosophique des loisirs.Mots-clés, comportement de loisirs, ce qui signifie loisir, de la technologie, le consumérisme
