Double‐mode adjustment of Tibetan Plateau heating to the summer circumglobal teleconnection in the Northern Hemisphere

Abstract: A quasi-stationary circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) in the Northern Hemisphere in summer is associated with summer droughts and floods and exhibits some vorticity anomalies. The CGT anomaly and its forcing sources were explored based on reanalysis data and the EI Nino 3.4 index. The term v ′ / x was used to describe the multi-scale variability of vorticity and the CGT anomaly, which had a 7-wavenumber and a small interannual amplitude of v ′ / x from 1987 to 2000 but a large amplitude from 2000 to 2010. The i… Show more

“…As a consequence of its preferred phase, it exhibits spatially confined troughs and ridges which then persist over specific regions ( Fig. 3) (18,29). A characteristic circumglobal pattern of alternating temperature anomalies thus arises across the mid-latitudinal belt with significantly elevated surface temperatures over central North America, Western/Central Europe and the Caspian Sea region (Fig.…”

“…The hemispheric circulation associated with amplified wave-7 is a recurrent pattern observed in other years. As a consequence of its preferred phase, it exhibits spatially confined troughs and ridges which then persist over specific regions (figure 3) [18,29]. A characteristic circumglobal pattern of alternating temperature anomalies thus arises across the mid-latitudinal belt with significantly elevated surface temperatures over central North America, Western/Central Europe and the Caspian Sea region ( figure 3(a)).…”

“…e fact that the WPSH has been moving northward in recent years [69] also has an impact on the propagation of midlatitude wave trains. Additionally, the Rossby wave train that stretches from western Europe to West Central Asia is also caused by the strong barotropic instability at the jet stream exit region in the North Atlantic Ocean [30]. erefore, further studies are required to determine the relationships among the different resources.…”

“…e thermal forcing of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) also plays a decisive role through air pumping [26][27][28]. Moreover, the TP also has a considerable influence on the boreal circulation and precipitation as a significant surface and atmospheric heating source in summer [29,30], which, therefore, is also considered.…”
