Double-blind Comparison of etodolac and diclofenac in patients Mith rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: The efficacy and tolerability of etodolac was compared to diclofenac in a multi-centre, double-blind, randomized parallel group study. Fifty-three patients with rheumatoid arthritis received etodolac (400 mg/day) and 55 patients received diclofenac (150 mg/day) for 12 weeks. Thirty-nine etodolac-treated patients and 44 diclofenac-treated patients completed the study. At the final evaluation, etodolac-treated patients showed significant (p < or = 0.05) improvement for all 4 primary assessments (patients' and ph… Show more

“…Some of the clinical trials also used diclofenac as comparator. The findings were universal that both etodolac and diclofenac showed comparable pain-relieving effect and tolerability 3,8,10 . In addition, although the incidence rate varied in previous studies, gastrointestinal symptoms were the most common drugrelated adverse events observed 10 .…”

In addition, although the incidence rate varied in previous studies, gastrointestinal symptoms were the most common drugrelated adverse events observed 10 . Similar to the present study, there was a statistically significant difference between the etodolac and diclofenac treatment groups for changes in SGPT value (-1.3 U/L and +11.2 U/L, respectively) observed in one previous study.…”

“…17 ) No suppression occurred with either SC58125 and SC-236, the COX-2-selective agents studied. To date, human studies involving relative COX-2 selective agents have shown efficacy in rheumatoid 18,19 and osteoarthritic pain 20,21 and in acute dental pain 22 areas where there is a strong peripheral and inflammatory component to the pain, but they have not been studied in areas of pain where central mechanisms predominate.…”
