“…Tinidazole is generally more expensive, reaches higher levels in serum and the genitourinary tract, has a longer half-life than metronidazole (12.5 hours versus 7.3 hours), and has fewer gastrointestinal side effects (676)(677)(678). In randomized clinical trials, recommended metronidazole regimens have resulted in cure rates of approximately 84%-98% (679)(680)(681), and the recommended tinidazole regimen has resulted in cure rates of approximately 92%-100% (680,(682)(683)(684)(685). Randomized controlled trials comparing single 2 g doses of metronidazole and tinidazole suggest that tinidazole is equivalent or superior to metronidazole in achieving parasitologic cure and resolution of symptoms (686).…”

“…Single dose treatments are associated with more frequent side effects than longer oral treatment. Standard treatments are a 5 to 7 day course of metronidazole 400 to 500 mg twice daily or 2g of metronidazole or tinidazole as single dose [49,50].…”

“…Oral single dose treatment with metronidazole seems to be effective in achieving short-term parasitological cure but is associated with more frequent side-effects than either longer oral or intravaginal treatment. It must, however, be noted that the drop-out rates (between 30 and 62%) were most significant in two of the short vs. long treatment trials (Thin et al 1979;Hager et al 1980), and the results of this comparison should be interpreted with caution. Intravaginal treatment showed parasitological cure rates around 50%, which is unacceptably low.…”
