For retrospective dosimetry purposes, the effects of the sample preparation process on the TL signal is studied. Moreover, the effect of the temperature (for example fire) the material was exposed to before the radiation incident on the OSL signal, thermal quenching, changes in the OSL luminescence signal in different excitation modes are investigated. In addition, with the use of research materials, a radiation incident scenario was directed and the incident dose was measured using the TL and OSL techniques. According to the results, it was found that all examined samples can be used as dosimetric materials for retrospective dose measurement in case of a radiation incident. While comparing the incident scenario dose values calculated by the TL method with the TLD100s placed at the incident scene, it could be concluded that there is a deviation smaller than 10% in the piggy bank and artificial dental porcelain samples. The results obtained from the OSL measurements showed a deviation smaller than 9% in the fuse porcelain sample and a deviation smaller than 14% in the ceramic nail file sample which were more relevant in comparison to the other samples' results.

Το αντικείμενο της παρούσας διατριβής είναι να διερευνήσει κατά πόσον η θερμοφωταύγεια (Thermoluminescence-TL) και η οπτικά προτρεπόμενη φωταύγεια (Optically Stimulated Luminescence-OSL) μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν ως αποτελεσματικές μέθοδοι για την ανίχνευση ακτινοβολημένων φαρμακευτικών σκευασμάτων στη μετα-αποστειρωτική δοσιμετρία ή/και στη δοσιμετρία ατυχημάτων. Για το λόγο αυτό, διεξήχθησαν συστηματικές μετρήσεις TL και OSL εμπορικών στερεών φαρμάκων και των γυάλινων δοχείων υγρών φαρμάκων (εφόσον εκτίθενται εξίσου στην ακτινοβολία), καθώς και υπολογιστική ανάλυση αποσυνέλιξης των καμπυλών σε συνιστώσες (computerized curve deconvolution analysis-CCDA), προκειμένου να εξεταστούν τα χαρακτηριστικά φωταύγειάς τους και οι ιδιότητες των εμπλεκόμενων παγίδων ηλεκτρονίων. Επιπλέον, καταβλήθηκε προσπάθεια για την ανάπτυξη ενός νέου πρωτοκόλλου για τον προσδιορισμό της απορροφούμενης δόσης (αποστείρωσης ή ατυχήματος) από τα θερμο-ευαίσθητα στερεά φάρμακα.Οι μετρήσεις σε πέντε φάρμακα στερεής κατάστασης (Aspirin®, Brufen®, Daktarin®, Panadol® και Procef®) έδειξαν ότι η TL δεν είναι κατάλληλη μέθοδος για τη μετα-αποστειρωτική δοσιμετρία ή/και τη δοσιμετρία ατυχημάτων στερεών φαρμάκων λόγω της θερμο-ευαίσθητης φύσης τους. Από την άλλη πλευρά, τα ακτινοβολημένα στερεά φάρμακα μπορούν να ανιχνευθούν αποτελεσματικά με OSL, ανεξάρτητα από τον τρόπο διέγερσης (σταθερής έντασης σκανδαλισμού ή γραμμικά αυξανόμενης οπτικής προτροπής) και το μήκος κύματος του φωτός διέγερσης (υπέρυθρο ή μπλε). Ωστόσο, η επαναληψιμότητα μεταξύ δειγμάτων του ίδιου φαρμάκου είναι μάλλον φτωχή, που ενδεχομένως να οφείλεται σε διαφορές της συγκέντρωσης των φωταυγειακών ουσιών από δείγμα σε δείγμα. Η CCDA αποκάλυψε ότι όλες οι μεμονωμένες συνιστώσες, οι οποίες συνθέτουν τις πειραματικές καμπύλες αποσύνθεσης, μπορούν να περιγραφούν με κινητική περίπου δεύτερης τάξης, ενώ μια πολύ γρήγορη συνιστώσα με διάρκεια ζωής λίγων δευτερολέπτων είναι εμφανής σε όλα τα στερεά φάρμακα.Οι μετρήσεις με τις παραπάνω μεθόδους διεξήχθησαν επίσης σε δύο διαφορετικούς τύπους δοχείων από γυαλί δύο φαρμάκων υγρής κατάστασης (Hexalen® και Voltaren®). Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα ευρήματα, τόσο η TL όσο και η OSL μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν αποτελεσματικά για την ανίχνευση ακτινοβολημένων υγρών φαρμάκων μέσω της ανίχνευσης των γυάλινων δοχείων τους, ενώ η εκτίμηση της δόσης μπορεί να επιτευχθεί με πολλούς τρόπους. Η CCDA έδειξε ότι τόσο τα TL όσο και OSL σήματα αποτελούνται από πολλές συνιστώσες με γραμμική απόκριση δόσης έως και αρκετά kGy. Επιπλέον, φαίνεται επίσης ότι υπάρχουν παγίδες με μεγάλο χρόνο ζωής και θα μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιηθούν για δοσιμετρικούς σκοπούς.Τέλος, αναπτύχθηκε ένα νέο πρωτόκολλο ανασύστασης δόσης μονού δισκίου (single-aliquot regenerative-dose) κατάλληλο για την εκτίμηση της ισοδύναμης δόσης με OSL σε θερμο-ευαίσθητα υλικά που εμφανίζουν ευαισθητοποίηση, όπως τα στερεά φάρμακα. Το πρωτόκολλο (που ονομάζεται SARHS) εξαλείφει τυχόν επιδράσεις ευαισθητοποίησης χωρίς να συμπεριλαμβάνει οποιαδήποτε θέρμανση του δείγματος και αποδείχθηκε ικανό να υπολογίσει τη δόση αποστείρωσης ή/και ατυχήματος ακτινοβολημένων φαρμάκων. Τα ευρήματα της παρούσας διατριβής είναι πολύ υποστηρικτικά και αποδεικνύουν την αποτελεσματική εφαρμογή των μεθόδων TL και OSL στη μετα-αποστειρωτική δοσιμετρία και τη δοσιμετρία ατυχημάτων των εμπορικών στερεών φαρμάκων και των γυάλινων δοχείων υγρών φαρμάκων.
