Doses to patients from photoneutrons emitted in a medical linear accelerator

Abstract: This study of doses to patients from emitted photoneutrons in a medical linear accelerator (Varian 2100C) was carried out. Dose calculation was performed using Monte Carlo Geant4 code. The model was used to calculate the neutron fluence, as a function of the neutron energy inside the treatment room to estimate the effective dose to patients. The ambient dose equivalent versus field size for patients is reported in this study. The ambient dose equivalent using 1 x 1 cm(2) field size, at isocentre and X-ray mode… Show more

“…Saeed et al .,[27] calculated the neutron dose equivalent of the 18 MV Varian 2100C by the Geant4 code about 4.4 mSv.Gy −1 at the isocenter; whereas, the values found by Fernández et al .,[6] were 6 mSv.Gy −1 using activation gold foils. These results show a reasonable agreement with what we found in this study (6.07 mSv.Gy −1 ).…”

“…The absorbed dose and dose equivalent due to the secondary neutron evaluated from the LET spectrum of recoiled tracks produced in CR-39 are compared with the previous results carried out in the other works [6,[51][52][53][54] as summarized in Table 2. The quite large differences in the dose value, ranging from 0.05 to 1.4 mSv/Gy, are found in the similar experiments.…”

“…Gamma radiation from induced activity will give fairly uniform irradiation of radiation therapists who enter the treatment room, while beta radiation dominantly irradiates the hands when the radiation therapists come into direct contact with wedge filters or other activated accessories 13,[27][28][29] . As radiation therapists are associated with repetitive workflow, the damaging effects of radiation can be accumulated, and thus, radiation hazards should be minimized.…”
