“…Whether the enhancement ratio of 1 2 obtained for the single dose radiation treatment of the KHT sarcoma (Rauth and Kaufman, 1974) (Fletcher, 1973). From the data of Schukovsky (1970) and Bush (1974) increases of 10-70% and 50-70O respectively would be predicted, and a formal clinical trial would be required to detect such increases.…”

“…However, investigators in a few centers persevered in their efforts to improve the techniques and achieved improved results, initially in superficial and exophytic tumors, but later also in the more extensive ones. Even large exophytic tumors of the suprahyoid epiglottic region responded well, when the mobility was unimpaired (17). By regular, careful follow-up examinations and continuing analysis of results, policies evolved, which included radiotherapy as an important part in the management.…”

“…In a series of 114 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx, a dose of 66 Gy at 2 Gy/day/5 days a week (NSD 1900, produced a 2-year local control rate in patients with T1 100% (9/9); T2 83% (15/18); T3 77% (10/13); and T4 44% (4/9). Reduced doses resulted in a lower control rate (17). Extension to the vallecula, base of the tongue, preepiglottic space, hypopharynx or the lymph nodes in the neck is prevalent in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx (18).…”

“…On the other hand. an increase of the dose to the tumour of a few per cent may drastically improve the probability of tumour control ( S H U - KOVSKY 1970, 1974 STEWART & JACKS- SON, TURESSON & NOTTER 1980). Furthermore, the difference between the dose level for tumour control and heavy reaction in normal tissue may sometimes be small.…”
