Dose-Related Enhancement of Mood and Cognition in Smokers Administered Nicotine Nasal Spray

Abstract: The discovery of the role of nicotinic receptors in attention and memory has led to the testing of nicotinic analogs as cognitive enhancing agents in patient populations. Empirical information about nicotine's ability to enhance elements of attention and memory in normal individuals might guide development of therapeutic uses of nicotine in cognitively impaired populations. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nicotine on continuous attention, working memory, and computational processing in… Show more

“…Hence nicotine, if it activates the nicotinic ACh receptors, would pathologically lock the network in the encoding stage or at least enhance the encoding. Certainly this is compatible with the attention enhancing effects associated with nicotine (in tobacco smoke) [25] : encoding and acquisition enhancement functionally are equated with attentional effects in the models. In order to fully understand the impact of nicotine on the models described in this section it is crucial to consider the dynamics of receptor activation as well as the dynamics of the neuronal population to get the full picture of nicotine's effect.…”

“…Additional studies are needed to clarify the mechanism for the potential gender and nicotine interaction. Interestingly, studies on other cognitive performance have also noted stronger nasal spray nicotinic effect in female patients than in male patients (Myers et al, 2007).…”

“…the subjective effects of nicotine (Myers, Taylor, Moolchan, & Heishman, 2008;Sofuoglu, Mitchell, & Mooney, 2009) and more likely to cite tension reduction, stimulation, social dynamics (Berlin et al, 2003), and appetite suppression as reasons for smoking (Reid, Pipe, Riley, & Sorensen, 2009). Smoking is associated with significant health risks in women (Perkins, 2001), and more women than men report having tried nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to quit smoking (Reid, et al, 2009).…”
