Dose of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy in Critically Ill Patients: A Bona Fide Quality Indicator

Abstract: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in critically ill patients, and renal replacement therapy (RRT) constitutes an important aspect of acute management during critical illness. Continuous RRT (CRRT) is frequently utilized in intensive care unit settings, particularly in patients with severe AKI, fluid overload, and hemodynamic instability. The main goal of CRRT is to timely optimize solute control, acid-base, and volume status. Total effluent dose of CRRT is a deliverable that depends on multiple factors and t… Show more

“…e score of the anxiety and depression scales was proportional to the severity of the anxiety and depression. A higher WHOQOL-BREF score directly results in a better quality of life [7,8]. WHOQOL-BREF includes physical health, mental state, independent ability, social relations, personal beliefs, and surrounding environment in six areas and 24 aspects.…”

“…In addition, Brazil is the third country in the world in the number of patients requiring dialysis in the long term [ 4 ]. In CKD, changes in glomerular filtration rates, whether or not associated with parenchymal changes, for more than 3 months [ 5 , 6 ] require treatment via renal replacement therapy by peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis (HD) for maintaining homeostasis and increasing patient survival [ 7 ]. However, in several countries, HD is an experience that influences the quality of life and can be painful [ 8 ].…”

“…Similar to the % gap between prescribed vs. achieved total effluent dose of CRRT [ 23 ], %FB Gap is an important CRRT quality indicator that should be systematically and dynamically monitored throughout the delivery of CRRT [ 24 ]. For example, a recent report by the Acute Disease Quality Initiative group recommended that %FB Gap should be less than 20% on average.…”
