Dose-dependent fluoxetine effects on boldness in male Siamese fighting fish

Abstract: As the use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) continues to rise, these compounds enter the environment in increasing frequency. One such PPCP, fluoxetine, has been found in detectable amounts in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, where it may interfere with the behavior of exposed organisms. Fluoxetine exposure has been found to influence boldness and exploration in a range of fish species; however, how it might alter behavior in multiple contexts or over time is rarely examined. To this end, the… Show more

“…For behavior, the consistent pattern reflected the expected coupling of more active animals also being more explorative and more risk taking. This contrasts with previous studies where contaminant exposure either induced a coupling between two behaviors (Brodin et al 2013) or disrupted behavioral correlations (Royaut e et al 2015a, Dzieweczynski et al 2016. In contrast to the expectations, behavior was less strongly integrated into the syndrome (see also Debecker et al 2016).…”

“…For both laboratory-based exploration and novel object trials, scores were calculated following 1 1 þ 2 2 þ 3 3 , where the numbers refer to time spent in each zone (figure 1), with 3 being the zone furthest from the safety box, and the zone incorporating the novel object [36]. For analytical purposes, novel object score incorporated both woodpigeon and jackdaw data combined.…”
