“…Using radiolabelled [l4C]ascorbic acid, Hornig et al [7] could show that with single doses of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 g the propor tion of urinary ascorbic acid excretion de creased from 75% at 1 g to 20% at 5 g. Other authors [9] found the relative absorption ca pacity to decrease from about 50% at intakes of 1.5 gto 16% at intakes of 12 g vitamin C. A study using divided doses [10] demonstrated that recovery of urinary ascorbic acid de creased from 57% at 2 x 500 mg vitamin C/ day to 19% at 3 x 2,000 mg/day. According to a study performed by Melethil et al [11], the renal clearance of ascorbic acid is directly dependent on the plasma concentration.
