Dorchester Dental Flossing Study

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of interdental flossing for preventing interproximal dental caries in the primary and young permanent dentitions. Following a clincial and radiographic examination, first-grade pupils attending three public schools in a fluoride-deficient region were selected. Each subject had at least one contralateral pair of caries-free contacting interproximal tooth surfaces. Experimental tooth surfaces were flossed with unwaxed dental floss by research assistants. The contr… Show more

“…Although the trend was that the fluoridated floss resulted in more pronounced reduction of lesion depth and mineral loss than the toothpicks, this was only significant for dentine. The effect of non-professional flossing on approximal caries has also given varying results [Granath et al, 1979;Wright et al, 1979;Gisselsson et al, 1983]. The present experimental study indicates that both non-fluoridated and fluoridated flosses have a positive effect, especially on dentine.…”

“…There seems to be no doubt about the relationship between interdental deplaquing using dental lloss and improved gingival health if properly executed (Englander 1979, Bergenholz & Brithon 1980, Suomi et al, 1980, However, the question of the use of floss and dental caries seems to be somewhat obscure. Several deplaquing studies which included the use of dental floss have been conducted to sol ve this problem (Badersten et al, 1975, Granath et al, 1979, Suomi et al, 1980, Wright et al, 1979, Only Badersten et al, (1975) and Wright et al, (1979) observed any signifieant reduction in proximal caries as a result of the use of dental floss.…”

“…In another study, a dilute iodine mouthwash (0.02%) failed to control plaque and gingivitis, but daily topical application of iodine solution (2% I2 and 2.4% Nal) did decrease plaque accumulation and control gingivitis [Kligerman and Bisada, 1975], In routine oral hygiene, flossing is rec ommended to reduce interproximal bacteri al plaque. This procedure mechanically dis places bacterial colonies growing in these areas, and reduces proximal decay [Wright et al, 1977[Wright et al, ,1979. Dental floss impregnated with a disinfecting agent such as iodine solution might exert a combined mechanical and chemotherapeutic effect.…”
