Doppler sonographic diagnosis of primary transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter

Abstract: Primary carcinoma arising in the urothelium of the ureter is rare, accounting for only 1% of all cancers of the upper urinary tract. We describe a case in which primary transitional cell carcinoma of the right ureter was sonographically detected in a 45‐year‐old woman. The mass exhibited tumoral vascularity on power Doppler sonography and spectral analysis. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Clin Ultrasound 28:361–364, 2000.

“…Accurate imaging diagnosis is the key to guiding treatments. However, the imaging findings of a ureteral malignant tumour may overlap with those of UTB, and both diseases often affect renal function [ 5 , 16 ]. Therefore, simple, feasible and minimally damaging tests are needed to distinguish UTB from a ureteral malignant tumour.…”

“…Ureteral malignancies occur primarily in the elderly, with a mean age of approximately 64 years at diagnosis [ 16 ]. In this study, the average age of the malignant tumour group was higher than that of the UTB group, and a malignant tumour should be excluded first for ureteral lesions in elderly patients.…”

“…On the analysis of the duplex Doppler imaging of the 8 patients, they had arterial spectral waveforms. As far as we know, there is only 1 case report concerning the spectral waveform of ureteral TCC, 13 which showed an arterial spectral waveform in the middle of a dilated ureter on TAUS.…”

“…[10][11][12] In several reports, CDUS could show blood flow in the TCC of the renal pelvis, ureter, and bladder. [13][14][15] However, previous reports failed to show blood flow in small tumors because TAUS was used. 14,15 We were able to find blood flows in ureteral masses by using TRUS.…”

“…It is hard to differentiate ureteral transi-tional cell carcinomas (TCCs) from blood clots, fungus balls, sloughed papillae, fibroepithelial polyps, endometriosis, and tuberculosis on TAUS. 6 In a previous report, 7 transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) was shown to improve the ability to detect TCCs involving the distal ureter in comparison with TAUS. In conjunction with TRUS, color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) could show blood flow in the ureteral TCCs.…”
