“…A unique characteristic of SPB measurements is that they directly record the intrinsic frequency ( trueω̂) of atmospheric disturbances, i.e., the frequency felt by air parcels, in contrast with ground‐based instruments that measure frequencies affected by Doppler shift [see, e.g., Vincent and Eckermann , ; Fritts and Wang , ]. This is used below to obtain intrinsic frequency spectra of horizontal kinetic energy ( Ekh) and potential energy ( E p ) and to quantify the contributions from low‐frequency (planetary) and gravity waves.…”

“…As (u) develops a strong vertical shear in a direction opposite to c, the intrinsic phase velocity grows in its magnitude and hence the wave variance. This is the effect of Doppler shifting on gravity wave variances as studied by Fritts and Wang [1991] and by A. H. Manson and coworkers [Manson et al, 1997[Manson et al, , 1999. For example, an anisotropic gravity wave spectrum with phase velocities in the westward direction will have variance enhancements at times or heights when the tide-induced wind speed reaches a maximum in the eastward direction.…”

“…However, we also have constraints on the intrinsic frequency, that is, f _• w _• N, with the high-frequency limit relevant here. For many wave motions, it is also fair to guess that the observed frequency is less than the intrinsic frequency because higher-frequency waves most often propagate against the mean flow [Fritts and Wang, 1991] the same periodicity in the two coupled fields. What is more alarming is that vertical velocity maxima clearly precede or are aligned with temperature maxima at the same altitudes, in direct contradiction to expectations for near-adiabatic motions.…”
