Doppler echocardiography of the main stems of the pulmonary arteries in the normal human fetus

Abstract: The objective of this study was to describe the normal blood flow velocity waveforms in the main branches of the right and left pulmonary arteries in the human fetus and to establish reference ranges for different Doppler parameters during the second half of pregnancy. Cross-sectional data were collected from 86 healthy human singleton fetuses between 18 and 38 weeks of gestation. With advancing gestation a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the peak systolic velocity, time averaged velocity and time velocity… Show more

“…They found a reduced At/Et ratio in six fetuses that died from complication of pulmonary hypoplasia. Contrary to Fuke et al, Chaoui et al found, while also examining the pulmonary artery branches, that the At/Et ratio increases with advancing gestational age [8]. They state that the increasing value of the At/Et ratio reflects decreasing pulmonary resistance normal to advancing gestation.…”

“…In our review of the literature we found many different approaches to assessment of fetal pulmonary blood flow (measurements, gate placement, sweep speed, etc). Even among those with similar approaches the findings are not consistent [8,9]. Studies that did not include At/ Et ratio have been excluded from the discussion.…”

“…62 Assessment of velocity waveforms of cardiac flow can be achieved using Doppler echocardiography. 9,17,44 Real-time blood motion imaging using color sonograms can be utilized. For this medical imaging modality, the speckle pattern from the blood flow signal is preserved, enhanced, and visualized.…”

“…Doppler examination of maternal and fetal vessels showed increased resistance in both uterine arteries with bilateral notches, as well as increased PI in both umbilical arteries, the descending aorta and in the RPA [3]. Ultrasound examination and fetal echocardiography using a high-resolution color Doppler system (ATL-HDI 5000, Philips-Solingen, Germany) revealed a normally structured heart and sinus rhythm.…”
