Doppler and oscillometric mean blood pressure best represent direct blood pressure measurements in anesthetized rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)

Abstract: Background: Indirect blood pressure measurements are often used to guide clinical decisions, but few studies have verified their agreement with direct arterial blood pressure in nonhuman primates. Here, the accuracy and precision of Doppler (DOP) and oscillometric (OS) [systolic (OSsys), mean (OSmean), and diastolic (OSdias)] blood pressure readings were assessed in rhesus macaques. Methods: DOP and OS were utilized to measure blood pressure values in nine anesthetized rhesus macaques, which were compared to di… Show more

“…These MAP measurements were lower than expected. According to recent literature oscillometric monitoring of BP are often underestimated (26, 27). At the conclusion of the procedure (8h) the physiological parameters were similar or slightly higher than the baseline for most of animals, which were euthanized without signs of septic shock…”

“…The average of 3 measures was used to identify animals with a mean blood pressure greater than 110 mm Hg or systolic blood pressure greater than 160 mmHg; these macaques were excluded from the study to eliminate phenocopies of HCM. 1,17 Due to the sequence of events, the blood pressure measurement was always and only assessed under ketamine sedation.…”
