Dopamine alleviates salt‐induced stress in Malus hupehensis

Abstract: Dopamine mediates many physiological processes in plants. We investigated its role in regulating growth, ion homeostasis and the response to salinity in Malus hupehensis Rehd. Both hydroponics and field-pot experiments were conducted under saline conditions. Salt-stressed plants had reduced growth and a marked decline in their net photosynthetic rates, values for Fv /Fm and chlorophyll contents. However, pretreatment with 100 or 200 μM dopamine significantly alleviated this inhibition and enabled plants to mai… Show more

“…Activity of SOD was determined as described by Li et al (2008), with one unit defined as the amount of enzyme required to cause 50% inhibition of the reduction of nitrotetrazolium blue chloride (NBT) as monitored at 560 nm. POD activity was assayed at 470 nm using the reaction substrates of hydrogen peroxide and guaiacol (Gao 2006), while CAT activity was determined by monitoring the decrease in absorbance at 240 nm (Li et al 2015).…”

“…For example, the salt injury index Table 1. (SI) serves as an important marker of relative resistance to the effects of salinity (Yin et al 2010;Li et al 2015). We calculated values for an AI to represent how tolerant our 17 apple rootstocks are to alkali stress.…”

“…It should also be noted that these compounds could have multiple roles in plant physiology. For example, although dopamine may be a cytokinin antagonist, it is also a powerful antioxidant and has been shown to alleviate water deficit or saline stress (Liang et al, 2018;Li et al, 2014). Li et al (2014) concluded that dopamine acted not only at the level of antioxidant defense, but also by regulating other mechanisms of ion homeostasis.…”
