Donor Human Milk Protects against Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common complication after preterm birth. Pasteurized donor human milk (DHM) has increasingly become the standard of care for very preterm infants over the use of preterm formula (PF) if mother’s own milk (MOM) is unavailable. Studies have reported beneficial effects of DHM on BPD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies on the effects of DHM on BPD and other respiratory outcomes. E… Show more

“…However, producing an adequate BM supply is 3 times less likely in preterm mothers, 5 and donor human milk (DHM) from a human milk bank is recommended 6 . The use of DHM is growing worldwide because of reported benefits, such as reduced necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) 7 and bronchopulmonary dysplasia 8 . However, human milk banking practices, such as prolonged storage at −20°C, thawing in the refrigerator, and frequent container changes, may decrease total fat content and LCPUFAs 9 .…”

“…However, clinical practices demonstrate that many beneficial properties of DHM still persist after HoP and several important factors are not affected by pasteurization [ 82 89 ]. The most representative example is that of oligosaccharides.…”
