“Donating our bodies to science”: A discussion about autopsy and organ donation in Turner syndrome

Abstract: At the Third Turner Resource Network Symposium, a working group presented the results of collaborative discussions about the importance of autopsy in Turner syndrome (TS). Considerable gaps in understanding the causes of death in TS can only be closed by more frequent death investigations and autopsies. The presentation included an overview of autopsy methods, strategies for utilizing autopsy, and biobanking to address research questions about TS, and the role of palliative care in the context of autopsy. “…In order to understand the mechanisms involved in aortic dissection, aortic histology is necessary. However, only few cases have been reported, so far [44]. Available histology showed a cystic necrosis in the aortic media, which has previously been described in other congenital aortopathies, such as Marfan syndrome [45].…”

“…High TGFβ activity increases fibrosis and inflammation, and induces the release of metalloproteases and may eventually lead to AD and dissection. Therefore, autopsy should be promoted in TS to decipher mortality biomarkers [44].…”

“…Some older women with Turner syndrome (or their families) who have a vulnerable cardiovascular system, or who are simply forward‐thinking, may want to discuss their end of life. This can be approached in a positive, sensitive manner, which focuses on the person's autonomy in how they want to live socially, financially, and medically (Prakash, San Roman, et al, ). This recent article responded to women with Turner syndrome who had voiced questions at national meetings, and expressed a wish to contribute to science by donating their body for autopsy and research.…”

“…The ability to ascertain and interpret distinct transcriptional patterns are important determinations that are useful in a variety of areas. Studies have been conducted on organ transplantation [13][14][15][16][17] , organs-on-chips for drug discovery 15,16 , regenerative medicine (e.g., liver regeneration) 13,17 , and a plethora of rapidly evolving areas of crime scene investigations (e.g. traumatic injury) 18 .…”
