Domestic violence and mental health in a Dutch community sample: The adverse role of loneliness

Abstract: The present study explored whether the adverse mental health consequences of domestic violence victimization vary by type of loneliness (i.e., emotional and social loneliness). Participants were drawn from the Dutch city of Rotterdam (N ¼ 7072). Domestic violence victimization, emotional loneliness and social loneliness were associated with self-reported mental health. In addition, interaction effects were observed between domestic violence victimization and each type of loneliness. Implications for policy pra… Show more

“…In the confirmatory phase we tested three models: (a) a unidimensional model that tests the hypothesis that loneliness is a heterogeneous construct composed of different types of subjective experiences of social interaction (de Jong Gierveld & Kamphuis, 1985;Moorer & Suurmeijer, 1993;van Tilburg, 1988); (b) an oblique model that considers that social and emotional loneliness are related theoretically and empirically (Dykstra & Fokkema, 2007;Leung et al, 2008, van Baarsen et al, 1999van Baarsen et al, 2001), and (c) an orthogonal model that considers the existence of two unrelated types of loneliness (Kunts et al, 2010;Zammuner, 2008). To determine which model best fitted the data, we examined the goodness of fit indices available in AMOS for tetrachoric correlations: RMR  .08 (Hu & Bentler, 1998), GFI and AGFI  .90 (Hoyle & Panter, 1995), NFI  0.95 (Bentler, 1990) and PNFI  .90 (James, Mulaik, & Brett, 1982).…”

“…Eaton et al, 2008;Kim, Park & Emery, 2009), with some even only using one question to assess it (e.g. Kunst, Bogaerts & Winkel, 2010 Bonomi, Anderson, Rivara & Thompson, 2007;Eldoseri, Tufts, Zhang & Fish, 2014;Johri et al, 2011). The measures that are especially designed for use with female victims may be restricted when measuring male victims' experiences and also the experiences of victims from the LGBTQ+ community.…”

“…Studies that looked at male and female victims in the same analysis were not common, and when men and women were both included in a study, those studies tended to be conducted in Western countries (e.g. Ackerman & Field, 2011;DiBello, Preddy, Øverup & Neighbors, 2016;Kunst et al, 2010). This would imply that there may be cultural differences in the way that IPV is perceived by both the general public and researchers.…”

“…Los resultados de Zammuner (2008) y de otros autores con población joven y adulta (p. ej., Kunts, Bogaerts & Winkel, 2010) también apoyan la bidimensionalidad de la escala.…”
