“…Likewise, domestic violence researchers also have identified a connection between patterns of abusiveness and being reared in abusive environments (Payne & Gainey, 2005;Widom, 1989). Indeed, research has noted that in households where partner abuse is occurring, it is not uncommon for child maltreatment and/or battering to also be present (Bourassa, Lavergne, Damant, Lessard, & Turcotte, 2006;Edleson, 1999;Payne, 2008). Ultimately, such findings coincide with the concerns of Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) about parenting techniques, particularly the abilities to monitor children's behavior and recognize and appropriately respond to problems, and the development of self-control.…”

“…Previous research suggests that domestic violence training should be mandated for all social services workers who require an understanding of domestic violence (e.g., child protective services workers). Training should provide workers with strategies to deal with the interpersonal nature of domestic violence (e.g., vicarious trauma, rapport-building) and should encourage collaboration among workers to promote a mutual understanding of the professional roles within the criminal justice system (Payne 2008). Future research is needed to explore the training needs of criminal justice workers and how training might be integrated to best support abuse survivors.…”

“…Recall that those who rated the different philosophies as important tended to rate the importance of training higher. All too often, the importance of training is under estimated, with some types of training taken for granted (Payne 2008). If supervisors want their workers to see training as valuable, they should ensure that officers define the goals or philosophies of supervision in positive ways.…”
