Investigou-se a associação entre sexo e violência física entre parceiros íntimos. Encontrou-se prevalência de sofrer qualquer violência física (17%), violência física moderada (16,6%) e violência física grave (7,3%). Não houve diferença significativa para violência física moderada em homens e mulheres, porém, quanto mais grave o ato maior a ocorrência deste nas mulheres. Por meio de regressão logística testou-se a associação da violência com o sexo, ajustando-se às variáveis exploratórias. Mulheres de maior idade, viúvas/separadas, pobres, menos escolarizadas e pretas registram maior probabilidade de sofrer violência. Nos homens, a prevalência de violência física grave apresentou alteração significativa apenas para estado civil. Uso abusivo de álcool por mulheres representou maior chance de sofrer violência física.

In the United Kingdom, "domestic violence" services are predominantly segregated and therapeutic interventions offered mainly to either female "survivors/victims" or male "perpetrators." Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 20 U.K. practitioners with the aim of deconstructing their understandings and approach to therapeutic practice using a thematic analysis. Their practices were found to be mainly informed by the gender paradigm, reflecting assumptions that men's abusive behavior was instrumental and chosen, whereas women behaved aggressively primarily in retaliation or defense. When negotiating sensitive, potentially dilemmatic issues, such as women revealing abusive behavior or men speaking about victimization, participants differed in the extent to which they experienced, or showed awareness of, cognitive dissonance. Those participants who took a gender perspective tended to scapegoat male "perpetrators" and excuse the behavior of female "victims," whereas those who took a gender-inclusive approach were more likely to speak about the motivation of both partners and other contributory factors maintaining the problem. The findings support the view that domestic violence services in the United Kingdom have been slow to respond to calls by researchers to bring more psychological theory and relational awareness to understandings of intimate partner violence (IPV) and its practices.

With the Internet-evoked paradigm shift in the academy, there has been a growing interest in students' Web-based information-seeking and source-use practices. Nevertheless, little is known as to how individual students go about searching for sources online and selecting source material for writing particular assignments. This exploratory study focuses on the Web-based searching and reading practices of a group of undergraduate students at a university in Hong Kong in preparing their end-of-semester written assignments. The data drawn upon included interviews and the students' process logs and their notes from reading. The study revealed that the students employed a range of search engines to conduct online research, they skim-read and read around search terms to select sources and source content, and they took indexical notes to document their decisions over citations for their essay. The paper ends by pointing out some pedagogical implications of the study and suggesting in-depth case studies as an avenue of further research.
