In companion animal medicine, urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common indications for antimicrobial therapy. Definitive diagnosis of UTI requires isolation of bacteria with routine urine culture from an animal with concurrent clinical signs. Urine culture is typically performed at reference laboratories where paired susceptibility testing can be performed, but delays in shipment or processing can affect results. This study evaluated the use of a selective chromogenic, point-of-care culture system (UTid+) compared to conventional urine culture. A total of 119 (73 canine and 46 feline) cystocentesis urine samples were evaluated. Conventional urine culture was positive for 28 (23.5%) of the 119 cultures and UTid+ culture was positive for 26 (21.8%). The overall sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 92.3%, 97.8%, 92.3%, 97.8 and 96.6% for UTid+ respectively. Overall, the UTid+ culture system showed an acceptable level of accuracy when compared to conventional urine culture. Agreement of identification results was high (κ = 0.90) with an important exception being Proteus spp. which was only identified in 1/3 positive cultures. UTid+ may be useful in scenarios where a common UTI pathogen is expected and identification within 24 h is ideal; however, conventional urine culture remains the gold standard.

Introduction. Pathology plays an essential and important role in diagnostic and choosing patients’ management strategies. The aim of our analytical article is to review opportunities of digital technologies applying to pathology with a focus on converges with clinical disciplines. Materials and methods. The search was conducted on Medline and Pubmed database and websites of laboratory equipment developers. Results. The emergence of a new direction – ‘digital pathology’, underlines a high interest of professional society in this theme. Nowadays there are enough solutions for each part of pathological workflow which provides development of fully digitalized pathological laboratories. In this article we present opportunities and perspectives of business-process organization from statements of objectives for pathologist, tissue collection, laboratory study to multidisciplinary analysis for further patients’ management based on opportunities of information technologies. Conclusion. Digital pathology is a transfer of all pathological routine workflow on digital platform which allows to unite efforts of clinicians, pathologists, public health organizers and patients. Separated blocks, which should constitute a united digital pathological platform, already exist and effort and time are required for full consolidation of all stages of pathological research.

Human biospecimen samples (HBS) and associated data stored in biobanks (also called “biotrusts,” “biorepositories,” or “biodistributors”) are very critical resources for translational research. As HBS quality is decisive to the reproducibility of research results, biobanks are also key assets for new developments in precision medicine. Biobanks are more than infrastructures providing HBS and associated data. Biobanks have pioneered in identifying and standardizing sources of preanalytical variations in HBS, thus paving the way for the current biospecimen science. To achieve this milestone, biobankers have successively assumed the role of “detective,” and then “architect,” to identify new detrimental impact of preanalytical variables on the tissue integrity. While standardized methods in omics are required to be practiced throughout research communities, the accepted best practices and standards on biospecimen handling are generally not known nor applied by researchers. Therefore, it is mandatory to raise the awareness within omics communities regarding not only the basic concepts of collecting, storing, and utilizing HBS today, but also to suggest insights on biobanking in the cancer omics context.
