The cognitive functioning of individuals with stronger endorsement of right-wing and prejudiced attitudes has elicited much scholarly interest. Whereas many studies investigated cognitive styles, less attention has been directed towards cognitive ability. Studies investigating the latter topic generally reveal lower cognitive ability to be associated with stronger endorsement of right-wing ideological attitudes and greater prejudice. However, this relationship has remained widely unrecognized in literature. The present meta-analyses revealed an average effect size of r = À.20 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) [À0.23, À0.17]; based on 67 studies, N = 84 017] for the relationship between cognitive ability and right-wing ideological attitudes and an average effect size of r = À.19 (95% CI [À0.23, À0.16]; based on 23 studies, N = 27 011) for the relationship between cognitive ability and prejudice. Effect sizes did not vary significantly across different cognitive abilities and sample characteristics. The effect strongly depended on the measure used for ideological attitudes and prejudice, with the strongest effect sizes for authoritarianism and ethnocentrism. We conclude that cognitive ability is an important factor in the genesis of ideological attitudes and prejudice and thus should become more central in theorizing and model building.

Intelligence as a Function of Conservatism among White South African Students

This study examined the relationship between general conservatism and components of intelligence in a White South African student sample. The results indicated no significant difference for full-scale IQ as measured by the South African Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) between subjects who achieved higher or lower scores on the conservatism variables. However, those subjects who had more conservative scores on measures of sociopolitical attitudes and traditionalism achieved higher scores on the block design and digit symbols subtests of the scale. A similar pattern emerged for performance IQ, with those with more conservative scores on the measure of traditionalism achieving higher scores than the less conservative subjects. In addition, disordinal interactions emerged when the relationship between the significant variables underlying conservatism and scores on the South African WAIS was examined.

Although most research on creativity deals only with individuals, there are many settings in which creative tasks are assigned to groups. Indeed, in most contemporary research settings collaborative inquiry is the norm. Extensions to the psychoeconomic theory of creativity provide several specific predictions about the nature and optimization of group creativity. These predictions are based on consideration of the ways in which some individual differences in creative style, such as domain experience and flexibility of thinking, are likely to interact. Instead of characterizing such attributes as conducive or harmful to the creative process, the psychoeconomic theory explicitly recognizes their potential for contributions in both directions. In particular, the theory implies that groups should be composed of heterogeneous participants who vary in their experiences within the domain in question, and who are only moderately familiar with one another, for most successful creative performance. This proposal is contrary to several theories which imply greater success from more congenial and symmetric groups. The theory also yields detailed predictions for how the optimal composition of a creative group should vary in response to changes in the characteristics of the group's members and the structure of its working environment.
