Does the venue of scientific conferences leverage their impact? A large scale study on Computer Science conferences

Abstract: PurposeConferences bring scientists together and provide one of the most timely means for disseminating new ideas and cutting-edge works. The importance of conferences in many scientific areas is testified by quantitative indexes. The main goal of this paper is to investigate a novel research question: is there any correlation between the impact of scientific conferences and the venue where they took place?Design/methodology/approachTo measure the impact of conferences, the authors conducted a large scale anal… Show more

“…The organisation of more conferences, workshops and seminars will play a great role in advocacy and awareness of the role of IFLA in the implementation of the Treaty among countries. Bedogni et al (2022) argue that conferences are fundamental avenues for sharing, spreading and communicating new knowledge in all disciplines; they give scholars opportunities to meet and share valuable ideas. In Africa, for instance, it is surprising that even though the Marrakesh Treaty was signed in Marrakesh, Morocco is still not a member of IFLA, which implies that a lot needs to be done to promote advocacy of the Marrakesh Treaty and the role of IFLA in its implementation.…”

“…There are also papers researching some general topics of interest using these techniques. Bedogni et al (2023) studied the correlation between the impact of computer science conferences and conference venues using a 30 years dataset. They showed that conference impact is correlated with country-wide touristic indexes.…”

“…Based on early citation features (Abrishami and Aliakbary, 2019) and bibliometric features (Hu et al, 2020), scholars have introduced social network features (Colladon et al, 2020), semantic features (Ma et al, 2021) and altmetric indicators (Thelwall and Nevill, 2018) into prediction. In addition, some scholars have analyzed the association between papers' impact and other paper factors, such as keyword popularity (Hu et al, 2020), disciplinary differences (Yang and Qi, 2021), interdisciplinary components' citation intensity (Chen et al, 2021), journal rank (Doulani, 2021), conference paper venue (Bedogni et al, 2022), the number of publications made by the authors (Wijewickrema, 2022) and whether the paper is published according to the author-pays charges model (Amjad et al, 2022). Most existing regression models rely on early citation features.…”
