Does the Translucency of Novel Monolithic CAD/CAM Materials Affect Resin Cement Polymerization with Different Curing Modes?

Abstract: Lower depth of cure was observed as the amount of transmitted light decreased in the investigated materials. In clinical practice, light-cured resin cements may result in inadequate polymerization for ceramic materials with lower TP values. Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate and nanoceramic resins may be reliable restorative materials for a restoration with both optimal esthetics and sufficient mechanical strength resulting from proper polymerization.

“…It has been reported that LDS (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG) have a higher TP than ZLS (Vita Suprinity; Vita Zahnfabrik) 2,3,6,25 . Çaprak et al 24 have found contrary results, but Bacchi et al 8 revealed a similar TP for HT LDS (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG) and HT ZLS (Vita Suprinity; Vita Zahnfabrik). Of note, both Awad et al 14 and Arif et al 3 found a higher TP for ZLS (Celtra Duo; Dentsply Sirona) than LDS (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG).…”

“…Previous studies 2,3,6,14,24,25 have reported inconsistent results regarding the TP of LDS and ZLS when comparing two different brands of ZLS ceramics (eg, Vita Suprinity; Vita Zahnfabrik and Celtra Duo; Dentsply Sirona, respectively). It has been reported that LDS (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG) have a higher TP than ZLS (Vita Suprinity; Vita Zahnfabrik) 2,3,6,25 .…”

“…Translucency is one of the important factors in the selection of the material to be used, especially in the restoration of esthetic zone. 15 Translucency of dental ceramics varies depending on microstructure and crystalline volume. 20 It is known that if the crystals in the structure of the ceramic are smaller than the wavelength of visible light, the material will be seen as more transparent.…”

“…Light-cure resin cements used for cementation of allceramic restorations have advantages such as adequate work time and ease of cleaning extra cement after cementation. 15 However, the degree of conversion varies according to the amount of light that reaches the resin. 16 To solve this problem, dual-cure resin cements are used in thick and low-translucent restorations.…”

“…Although translucency has clinical importance in the esthetics and natural appearance of restoration materials, 3,36 few studies have investigated TP values for ZLS glass-ceramic. 3 Sen et al 28 , Awad et al 3 , and Caprak et al 37 evaluated the TP values for different CAD-CAM materials; Vita Suprinity (ZLS) showed the highest TP values in all of these studies. According to Awad et al 3 , better TP values for ZLS ceramic might be due to the high glass content that results from smaller silicate crystals in the lithium silicate glassy matrix.…”
