Effect of cement color and tooth‐shaded background on the final color of lithium disilicate and zirconia‐reinforced lithium silicate ceramics: An in vitro study

Objective: To evaluate the translucency and effects of different cement colors on the final shade of lithium disilicate ceramics (LDS) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramics (ZLS) over an A1 and A3 tooth-shaded background. Materials and Methods: Eighty-eight rectangular-shaped specimens were sliced from LDS and ZLS blocks. The final thickness of the specimens was set at 0.8 ± 0.01 mm. Spectrophotometric measurements for the translucency were taken against black and white backgrounds. Composite resin tooth-shaded background disks were fabricated in two shades (A1 and A3), as were resin cement disks (opaque and translucent) (n = 11). Next, the ceramic specimens and tooth-shaded backgrounds were connected with glycerin, and baseline measurements were taken. These measurements were used as a reference. Then, the ceramic specimens, cement specimens, and tooth-shaded backgrounds were connected together with glycerin, and a second set of measurements was taken. The CIEDE2000 (ΔE 00) color formula was used to calculate the translucency and color differences. A Mann-Whitney U test was also performed for the translucency, and a three-way ANOVA (analysis of variance) test was performed for the ΔE 00 values (α = .05). Results: The LDS and ZLS groups had similar translucency (P = .055). The ΔE 00 values of the specimens were significantly affected by the cement color and tooth-shaded backgrounds in the LDS and ZLS groups (P < .05). Using the opaque cement color resulted in statistically significant differences against the light and dark (A1 and A3) tooth-shaded backgrounds in both the LDS and ZLS groups (P = .022 and P = .006). Conclusions: The material type did not affect the translucency or final color. However, the cement color did affect the final shade when thin ceramic restorations were used. Clinical Significance: It should be noted that the cement color and tooth-shaded background used may change the final color of thin high translucency ceramic restorations that contain lithium disilicate and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate.

The aim of the present study was to determine the degree of conversion of light-and dual-cured resin cements used in the cementation of all-ceramic restorations under different thicknesses of translucent (T) and high-translucent (HT) polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network (PICN) material. MATERIALS AND METHODS. T and HT PICN blocks were prepared at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm thicknesses (n=80). Resin cement samples were prepared with a diameter of 6 mm and a thickness of 100 μm. Light-cured resin cement was polymerized for 30 seconds, and dual-cure resin cement was polymerized for 20 seconds (n=180). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used for degree of conversion measurements. The obtained data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey HSD, and independent t-test. RESULTS. As a result of FTIR analysis, the degree of conversion of the light-cured resin cement prepared under 1.5-and 2.0-mm-thick T and HT ceramics was found to be lower than that of the control group. Regarding the degree of conversion of the dual-cured resin cement group, there was no significant difference from the control group. CONCLUSION. Within the limitation of present study, it can be concluded that using of dual cure resin cement can be suggested for cementation of PICN material, especially for thicknesses of 1.5 mm and above.

Objectives: The effects of three different surface finishing methods and aging on the surface roughness and optical properties of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) glass-ceramic were investigated. Materials and Methods: Rectangular specimens (0.6 mm thickness) were sliced from ZLS blocks (N=36). Three different types of surface finishing [glazing combined with crystallization (ZLS-CF) or after crystallization (ZLS-G) and polishing (ZLS-P)] (n=12) and 5000 thermocycles were applied. Three sets of measurements were performed before and after aging to determine the color coordinates and surface roughness (Ra) by using a colorimeter and profilometer, respectively. The mean surface roughness (Ra) values were calculated. Color differences and translucency parameter (TP) values were calculated using the color difference ΔEab and TP formulas. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the color difference, translucency, and surface roughness values (α=.05). Results: Significant differences in the ΔE values were not observed (p=.736) for specimens with different types of surface finishing. A significant difference was observed between the translucency values for different surface finishing groups before aging (p<.001). A significant difference in the surface roughness data between samples with different kinds of surface finishing was observed both before and after aging (p<.001). The ZLS-P group exhibited lowest surface roughness values before and after aging (p<.001). A positive significant correlation between the ΔE and translucency change values was observed in both the ZLS-G (p=.005) and ZLS-P (p<.001) groups. Conclusions: The surface finishing type did not affect the color change of ZLS glass-ceramic. The translucency values for different surface finished ZLS glassceramic specimens changed before aging. After aging, the surface finishing did not affect the translucency of ZLS glass-ceramic. All tested groups exhibited surface roughness values higher than the plaque accumulation threshold (Ra=0.2 mm).
