Does the severity of depressive symptoms after stroke affect long-term survival? An 18-year follow-up

Abstract: ObjectiveWe tested whether the severity of depressive symptoms in acute stroke and 4 years later are predictors of long-time survival.MethodWe evaluated the severity of stroke in 82 patients with acute stroke by the Barthel index, the Scandinavian Stroke Scale and the Orgogozo scale, and we also quantified the severity of depressive symptoms by the Beck and the Hamilton scales in the first week of stroke, in 1995. We re-evaluated the scales 4 years after stroke in 41 out of 48 survivors. We checked the surviva… Show more

“…In another prospective study, depression detected 3 months after stroke has been independently associated with poor functional outcome [ 14 ]. These findings are not consistent, and another study showed the severity of depressive symptoms was not found to be independent predictor of length of survival in the short- and long-term follow-up of 18 years [ 15 ].…”

“…Arm function and daily life activities of the patients in the JM+ AC group might be improved through the increase in muscle activity induced by JM and the recovery of neurological damage by AC treatment. Depression is associated with pain in poststroke patients [7], and depression in these patients are associated with mortality, suicide risk, and quality of life [42][43][44].…”

“…13 In our previous study we found that depressive symptoms may persist long after stroke, and scores on the depression scales at 4 years after stroke correlated with both stroke severity and depressive scores in the acute phase. 14 Pre-stroke socioeconomic factors may also contribute to PSD. 15 Living alone and having few social contacts have been found to predict depression.…”
