Does self‐care agency change between hospital admission and discharge? An Orem‐based investigation

Abstract: Authors found no change in patient self-care agency between hospital admission and discharge. Outcomes may have been due to the inappropriate choice of the conceptual framework applied for acute care settings or to the insufficient length of the study. A longitudinal approach to observe long-term improvement of self-care capabilities is recommended.

“…The informants valued a good relationship with the staff and not being inferior to the staff. A satisfying relationship between the nurse and the patient can lead to a higher capacity for self-care [ 31 ], and a high self-care capacity can strengthen patients’ autonomy and their possibility to make decisions about their care [ 32 ]. Respect and seeing the patient as a person are important parts of patient-centred care and lead to greater trust and understanding between the patient and the staff [ 33 ] and greater patient satisfaction [ 34 ].…”

“…Self-care agency has gained attention and has been emphasized by health professionals in promoting self-care in various groups of patients (Evers, Isenberg, Philipsen, Senten, & Brouns, 1993;Herber, Schnepp, & Rieger, 2008;Zrínyi & Zékányné, 2007). Older adults whose self-care agency decreases with age (Soderhamn, Lindencrona, & Ek, 2000) should be assessed for their competence in performing certain health behaviors, including managing sodium consumption.…”
