Abstract: The question, 'Does religion (or spirituality) cause physical health benefits?' may be given at least four diverging interpretations in terms of causal path diagrams. In common usage, the question may be interpreted to indicate that religion causally influences health by: (1) any mechanism, including well-established factors such as social support and improved health behaviors; (2) additional mechanisms, such as enhanced positive psychological states (e.g. faith, hope, inner peace) acting through psychoneuroim… Show more

“…Even more challenging is to conduct this type of study with guidance from a theoretical model. The aforementioned models of religious involvement and health Holt, Schulz, et al, in press;Levin & Vanderpool, 1989;Musick et al, 2000;Oman & Thoresen, 2002) were used as guidance in that they propose that religious involvement is positively associated with health outcomes and/or behaviors and that the role of social support (among other factors) may partly account for this association. In the present study, social support was accounted for by controlling for marital status.…”

“…Although several researchers cite similar models of religious involvement and health (Holt, Lewellyn, & Rathweg, 2005;Holt, Schulz, & Wynn, in press;Levin & Vanderpool, 1989;Musick, Traphagan, Koenig, & Larson, 2000;Oman & Thoresen, 2002), the field in general suffers from a lack of theory (Idler, 1987). Many studies examine relationships between religious involvement and health outcomes and/or behaviors and most do so in the absence of a guiding theoretical model.…”

“…What is known is that chronic diseases interrupts many areas of one's life, which can lead to depression, irritability and loss of hope. (2) Spirituality can be used as a coping strategy for critical situations of people's lives, since it can increase the sense of purpose and meaning of life, which are associated with greater resistance to stress, which is related to diseases. “…O que se sabe é que a doença crônica interrompe muitas áreas da vida da pessoa, o que gera depressão, irritabilidade e perda de esperança. (14) A espiritualidade pode ajudar a manter a independência ao encarar a doença crônica, enfrentar melhor a dor e aceitar o aumento da dependência quando as intervenções médicas chegam ao limite. Diferentes estudos têm mostrado que as maiores prevalências de depressão têm sido observadas em doentes com: AVC, doença coronária, câncer e Alzheimer.…”
