Does Physical Activity Mediate the Association Between Perceived Neighborhood Aesthetics and Overweight/Obesity Among South African Adults Living in Selected Urban and Rural Communities?

Abstract: Aesthetics was positively associated with PA; both aesthetics and PA were negatively associated with overweight and obesity. There was no evidence to support a significant mediating effect of PA on the relationship between aesthetics and overweight/obesity. Future studies should consider objective assessment of aesthetics and PA. In addition, future studies should consider using longitudinal design to evaluate food-related environments, which are related to overweight or obesity.

“…The literature on PA as a mediator among walkability, BMI, and obesity has been mixed. Whereas some studies have reported that PA partially mediates the association between walkability and BMI or obesity [14][15][16][17], other studies have found no mediating effect of PA on this association [18][19][20]. Results from our mediation analysis indicate that, in our nationally representative sample of US adults, PA partially mediated the effect of perceived walkability on BMI.…”

“…A few studies already examined whether PA and/or ST mediated the relationships between the physical environment and weight outcomes (Malambo et al, 2017;Van Dyck et al, 2010;Poortinga, 2006). While Poortinga (2006) and Malambo et al (2017) found that self-reported PA was not a mediator of the associations between perceived environmental characteristics and adults' weight outcomes, results of a Belgian study showed that accelerometer-assessed MVPA mediated the association between neighbourhood walkability and BMI. Accelerometer-assessed ST was not a significant mediator in that study (Van Dyck et al, 2010).…”

“…It is important to note that the Scale of Perception of the Environment for the Practice of Physical Activity has been adapted from a globally-recognized scale that has the objective of assessing walkability and physical activity practice, but has been used with different health outcomes 46,47 . In Brazil, the EpiFloripa study evaluated the characteristics of the neighborhood environment and sedentary behavior in the elderly using the scale proposed by Florindo et al 30 .…”
