Does osteoporosis predispose falls? a study on obstacle avoidance and balance confidence

Abstract: BackgroundOsteoporosis is associated with changes in balance and physical performance and has psychosocial consequences which increase the risk of falling. Most falls occur during walking; therefore an efficient obstacle avoidance performance might contribute to a reduction in fall risk. Since it was shown that persons with osteoporosis are unstable during obstacle crossing it was hypothesized that they more frequently hit obstacles, specifically under challenging conditions. The aim of the study was to investi… Show more

“…Recently, osteoporosis has been recognized as a diabetic complication [7][8][9]. Several studies have shown that osteoporosis is associated with a risk of falls because osteoporotic fractures, such as hip and vertebral fractures, cause imbalance and decreased physical performance [19][20][21]. However, no studies have examined the association between the risk of falls and fractures in patients with T2DM.…”

“…Glavni cilj vežbanja kod žena u postmenopauzi je da se poveća mišićna masa, poboljšaju parametri mišićne funkcije − snaga i balans, koji su važni faktori rizika za pad i nezavisno od koštane gustine, faktori rizika za prelom [18]. Vežbe jačanja mišića obavljaju se elastičnim trakama, mašinama, tegovima i drugim izometrijskim vežbama.…”

“…However, a study by Hunter et al [2010] did not find an association between IMD and the premutation. There is evidence both for [Behm et al, 2012] and against fibromyalgia being an IMD [Schmidt-Wilcke et al, 2011; Üçeyler at al., 2011] but the cytokine profiles are disturbed in patients with fibromyalgia and such disturbances are common in those with the premutation because of miRNA dysfunction as described below [Sellier et al, 2013]. …”
