Does Neuropathic Pain Affect the Quality of Sleep?

Abstract: Objective: We aimed to evaluate the quality of sleep (QoS) in patients with neuropathic pain (NP) and to investigate the association between possible QoS impairment and NP characteristics. Materials and Methods:Patients with NP and controls were examined. Age, sex, NP duration, NP cause (central, peripheral, or mixed), and pain intensity (with a Likert-type scale and visual analog scale) were recorded. NP was screened with Douleur Neuropathique 4 questions (DN4), and QoS was evaluated using the Pittsburg Sleep… Show more

“…In the present study, using the PASI, which is currently accepted as the gold standard tool for evaluating disease severity in psoriasis, and using a validated sleep quality questionnaire, a significant negative correlation between psoriasis severity and sleep quality was determined in patients with psoriasis [8]. Sleep disturbances have also been detected in other chronic conditions [19].…”

“…Neuropathic pain develops in 10–50% of patients with distal lower limb polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Almost all patients with diabetic neuropathic pain report quality of life impairment [ 18 ], with 80% experiencing poor sleep [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Unfortunately, drug therapy alone has not been effective enough in the treatment of many patients with severe neuropathic pain [ 18 , 22 ].…”

“…Recent evidence shows that there is a relation between sleep and NP. One recent study concluded that about 80% of patients suffering from NP have sleep disorders 10. It has also been reported that sleep deprivation can greatly reduce the pain thresholds along with signs of depression and anxiety which can aggravate pain 11.…”
