Purpose It is commonly observed in trainings that all trainees do not get satisfied with the performance of the trainer. The usual way to increase the satisfaction of trainees is a stress on improving task communication of the trainer. It is based on the assumption that effective task communication essentially fosters training effectiveness. This study aims to provide preliminary evidence that effective task communication can also obstruct training effectiveness besides promoting it. To achieve this objective, the authors hypothesized a dual-process model of training effectiveness based on uncertainty reduction theory. Design/methodology/approach This was a field study in which the authors collected time-lagged data from seven trainings. The trainings were designed to impart technical knowledge of multilevel analyses to professional social science researchers. Confirmatory factor analysis for ordinal indicators was used to test the measurement properties of the model and scales. Structural equation modeling for ordinal indicators was used to test hypotheses. Findings This study provided evidence of an overall positive effect of the trainer’s task communication on the trainee’s communication satisfaction. A complex mediation analysis also revealed the existence of two opposite psychological processes. While the first process transmitted the positive effect of task communication to communication satisfaction, the other process diminished this positive effect. Implications for the theory and practice of training are discussed. Originality/value Training scholars and practitioners universally believe that an effective task communication of trainers essentially promotes training effectiveness. This study has provided empirical evidence that this assumption is an incomplete picture of a complex reality that requires further investigation.

Underpinned by anxiety/uncertainty management (AUM) theory, this study uses Baron and Kenny's (1986) framework to test the prediction that intercultural willingness to communicate (IWTC) mediated the relationship between anxiety and uncertainty among international students at University Putra Malaysia. The previous study displayed a significant relationship between anxiety, uncertainty, and intercultural adjustment while moderated by mindfulness. As a high-context culture in communication, Malaysia specialized in interpersonal and intergroup communication among ethnic and races. While intercultural willingness to communicate plays a crucial role in intercultural communication. Results through Multi-linear regression (SPSS) to investigate a possible method for testing mediation effects of intercultural willingness to communicate (IWTC) on the relationship between anxiety and uncertainty. Employed surveys were used to collect data to test hypotheses predicting intercultural adaptation. A total of 201 international students which includes undergraduates and post-graduate students at the University Putra Malaysia participated in the survey. This study revealed that anxiety and uncertainty have a direct negative influence on intercultural willingness to communicate and an indirect negative influence on intercultural adjustment. Especially, this study was conducted under the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Введение. В статье представлены результаты экспериментального исследования вклада тревоги и неопределенности в межкультурное взаимодействие, рассмотренного в контексте теории управления беспокойством/неопределенностью У. Гудиканста. Несмотря на наличие корреляционных исследований, подтверждающих базовые положения теории, экспериментально изучены только предпосылки желания взаимодействовать с представителями людьми иной культуры, которое является одной из характеристик эффективного межкультурного взаимодействия. Более представленным в теории управления беспокойством/неопределенностью критерием эффективности межкультурного общения является воспринимаемая эффективность межкультурного общения, ранее экспериментально не изученная. Эксперимент был нацелен как на проверку гипотезы о существовании прямого эффекта ситуаций неопределенности и тревоги на воспринимаемую эффективность межкультурного взаимодействия, так и на изучение опосредования данного влияния воспринимаемой предсказуемостью межкультурного общения и воспринимаемой межгрупповой тревогой. Методы. В исследовании использован экспериментальный дизайн 2 (манипуляция неопределенностью) × 2 (манипуляция тревогой). В качестве зависимых переменных выступали воспринимаемая предсказуемость межкультурного общения, межгрупповая тревога и воспринимаемая эффективность межкультурного взаимодействия в предполагаемом общении с партнером из Колумбии. Всего в эксперименте приняло участие 92 человека, возраст от 18 до 44 лет, 78 % из которых составляли женщины. Эксперимент проходил онлайн, на платформе для видеоконференций Zoom. Результаты. Проверка гипотез была осуществлена с помощью медиационного анализа, основанного на регрессиях. Экспериментально продемонстрированы непрямые эффекты ситуации неопределенности и тревоги на воспринимаемую эффективность межкультурной коммуникации. При этом данная связь опосредована воспринимаемой предсказуемостью и воспринимаемой межгрупповой тревогой. Обсуждение результатов. Результаты исследования соответствуют предположениям теории управления беспокойством/неопределенностью У. Гудиканста и выступают ее первым экспериментальным подтверждением. При этом показано, что тревога и неопределенность являются разными путями обеспечения эффективности межкультурного общения.
