Does Low-Carbon City Pilot Policy Alleviate Urban Haze Pollution? Empirical Evidence from a Quasi-Natural Experiment in China

Abstract: As a comprehensive environmental regulation, the low-carbon city pilot policy (LCCP) may have an impact on haze pollution. The evaluation of the effectiveness of LCCP on haze pollution is greatly significant for air pollution prevention and control. Taking LCCP as the starting point, in this study we constructed DID, PSM-DID, and intermediary effect models to empirically test the impact and mechanism of LCCP on haze pollution, based on the panel data of 271 cities in China from 2005 to 2018. The findings show … Show more

“…Table 12 shows that green finance has a significant inhibitory effect on carbon emissions in the eastern and central regions at the level of 1% but insignificant in the western region. One potential reason is that the eastern region mainly gathers political, economic, and cultural centers, and the economic level is relatively developed (Yan et al, 2021). Therefore, the development of green finance can be better supported in the eastern region.…”

“…Various environmental policies have always been one of the main instruments of the government to combat AP , especially in the top–down command-and-control environmental management system in China, where the government is supposed to be the leading force in combating AP [ 26 ]. Over the past period, many scholars have conducted in-depth analyses of the effects of different AP prevention and control policies [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…As a result of the acceleration of industrialization and the combustion of fossil fuels in recent decades, a large number of greenhouse gases represented by CO 2 are emitted, resulting in global surface temperatures increasing and more frequent freak weather (Khan et al 2019 ; Yan et al 2021 ). Currently, the Chinese government is dedicated to carbon emission reduction.…”
