Proper use and efficient management of natural resources are critical to shaping a sustainable future in many resource‐rich countries in Africa. It is also well‐known that globalization creates a great awareness for sustainable resource extraction and provides cleaner production technology transfers to underdeveloped countries and enables them to establish a sustainable development pattern. However, evidence on the role of globalization in reducing the environmental impacts of natural resources in resource‐based economies is relatively scant. This study investigates sustainable future strategies by examining the role of natural resources, globalization, human capital, and urbanization in shaping the ecological footprint that is a broader indicator of environmental sustainability. To this end, Sub‐Saharan African countries—endowed with a rich natural resource base ranging from arable land, forest, freshwater, marine resources, oil, natural gas, minerals, and wildlife—are analyzed through advanced estimation techniques. Empirical results show that both resource dependence and abundance complicate to design a sustainable future by increasing the pressure on the environment. Similarly, urbanization deteriorates ecological conditions in Sub‐Saharan African countries. However, globalization and human capital seem the main sources of a cleaner and sustainable environment. The findings of the study shed new light on the main role of globalization in providing cleaner practices to reverse the negative influence of natural resource dependence and/or abundance on environmental quality.

It is becoming more and more certain that globalization is not just purely an economical phenomenon; it is exhibiting itself on a worldwide level. Amid globalization’s observable appearances, the most obvious are the larger international mobility of goods and services, flows of finance capital, data and information and most importantly people. On top of that, there are technological progresses and more international cultural interactions, which are facilitated by the enhancement of free trade of large quantities of more differentiated goods and also through immigration and tourism. The political changes and ecological concerns play an important part in this regard. In the current study, sustainability Indices are linked with the KOF Globalization Index to understand if more globalized countries are performing better in terms of sustainable development and its dimensions, especially environmental sustainability. Sustainability indices such as Human Development Index (HDI) and Environmental Performance Index (EPI) showed a stronger relation with different levels of globalization while others (Red List Index (RLI), Environment Sustainability Index (ESI)) did not. The results reveal that globalization has a positive implication on sustainability in the overall perspective.

Territorial Management and Governance, Regional Public Policies and their Relationship with Tourism. A Case Study of the Azores Autonomous Region

Bearing in mind the growth in regions with socio-economic bases dependent on tourism, studies that analyze spatial planning processes, regional public policies, and their relationship with tourism activities are essential to achieve the so-desired sustainable territorial development. Through case study research methods, territorial impact analysis, and questionnaires to explore the public perceptions, it was possible to design and implement a study regarding this specific regional governance theme on the Azores Autonomous Region (AAR). The research allowed us to learn that the most affected activities by public territorial policies in the AAR from the respondents’ perspective were accommodation (54.7%) and nature (51.9%). Conversely, the less affected were culture (15.1%) and rental/hire services (17.9). Furthermore, it was possible to identify two factors that rule public policies on the growth and development of the Azores: (i) impact in the natural landscape and (ii) suitable production factors.
