Does environmental regulation policy help improve green production performance? Evidence from China's industry

Abstract: Environmental regulation (ER) policy is an effective means to improve green production performance (GPP), but how ER policy will affect China's GPP remains to be studied. Therefore, with the panel data of 38 industrial sectors in China during 2004–2015, we employ the continuous difference in difference method and system generalised method of moment method to estimate the impact of ER policy on GPP in the heavily polluting sectors of China. The empirical results show that first, the implementation of ER policy … Show more

“…Moreover, green innovation emphasizes pollution prevention and requires firms to focus on their long‐term strategic orientation (Berrone, Fosfuri, Gelabert, & Gomez‐Mejia, ). As a result, governmental intervention in firms' environmental management is necessary, and it creates a context that compels firms to pay attention to their environmental impact because firms will incur higher risks of penalty if they fail to comply with regulations (Sun & Cao, ; Veugelers, ; Wang & Zhang, ). Moreover, stringent regulation will drive firms to seek opportunities for green innovation to create a competitive advantage over rivals.…”

“…Along similar lines, Rennkamp and Perrot (2016) examine the National Innovation Systems of Brazil, Africa, and India with respect to the wind energy sector. Finally, apart from the BICs which represent the majority of the research here, a recent analysis by Murshed (2020) incorporates trade openness and ICT capacities to understand local renewable energy innovation in a panel of South Asian emerging economies, while Wang and Zhang (2020) recently look at how R&D investment might lead to decoupling emissions from economic growth in BRICS economies. Along similar lines, Nathaniel et al (2021) examine Africa's carbon emissions trajectories and Simon (2013) explores the interesting question of greening Africa's cities.…”
